5 of the Best New Recruiting Apps

5 of the Best New Recruiting Apps Mobile swiping apps aren’t just for finding love and dating. Recruiters are increasingly turning to the Apple Store and Google Play to find new talent. By instantly matching employees with employers, mobile job apps have become must-have tools for hiring. Jobr say job seekers have swiped on their vacancies more than 100 million times and reached #2 in the Apple App Store Business section. With the recruiting software market reportedly worth $1.5 billion and 70% of applicants now using a mobile device to look for work, the future of recruitment apps is bright. As a recruiter or HR professional, there is huge pressure to find, contact and secure candidates for clients. Downloading new recruitment apps can help organisations improve their candidate search and expand their reach too. Here, we have established our top five mobile job apps for sourcing candidates and making new connections. 1. Jobr Jobr is as much for recruiters as it is for job seekers. Perfect for HR professionals that want to reach millions of job seekers, all they have to do is connect their LinkedIn account and create a profile page based on their requirements. Once that’s done, you scan through the app and swipe right for suitable candidates and left for those you don’t want. Jobr has recently been acquired by Monster Worldwide and will be launching mobile apps in new markets in 2017. Jobr ensures Monster has an excellent brand proposition in the Apple Store. The app is critical for them to maintain their relevance and reach in an increasingly mobile-driven market. 2. Shapr Shapr gives recruiters a new way to network with candidates. Connecting recruiters with like-minded individuals to develop fresh ideas, foster relationships, and ultimately secure employment. The app’s algorithms will plug into your LinkedIn account and provide HR professionals with a bespoke selection of nearby people to talk business with. All you have to do is fill in your bio (age, name, employment status, interests, and location) and just like Tinder, you can swipe right to accept, or left to reject, a new business connection. 3. Switch Switch is another Tinder-style app that allows users to search anonymously for jobs through an algorithmic matching service. Like Tinder, job seekers can swipe left or right on potential roles, and initiate a conversation when they match. The app’s code ensures that all users’ listed companies are automatically blocked from seeing their profile, so they can speak in confidence to recruiter without their company knowing they are job hunting. 4. Blonk Blonk is another Silicon Valley app that helps recruiters reach the best talent whenever they are in the world. With their global location reach, candidates can swipe and view jobs from Buenos Aires to London. After a mutual like, users will get a match and can chat directly with employers. Blonk gives recruiters access to a selected pool of gifted and motivated professionals, and allows them to invest their time evaluating candidates not sourcing them. 5. JobSnap JobSnap are targeting Generation Z jobseekers and market themselves as the ‘Snapchat’ for Jobs. With the CV attachment soon to be a relic of the past, JobSnap was created to make the hiring process easier for the candidate and recruiter/employer. The app has a Tinder-Snapchat hybrid swipe model. Job seekers and employers upload 30-second videos to sell themselves, which will replace the traditional photo and profile. “We’re 2.0 Tinder,” according to founder Jeff Boodie, who created the app to help young people who have lots of potential, but little experience on their resume. The app targets high turnover industries such as retail, food/beverage and hospitality. In recent years, they have signed up brands such as Del Taco, Panera Bread, Taco Bell, Dennys, and Applebees.

Back to the future reflect and revise for 2015 University of Manchester Careers Blog

Back to the future reflect and revise for 2015 University of Manchester Careers Blog The New Year’s approaching including celebrating with family and friends and making New Year’s resolutions. It is a time to reflect on the year gone by and make plans for the year ahead. Reflection Reflecting on what you did in the last year and what you want to do in the year ahead can be constructive and an encouragement. Encouraging â€" identifying what goals you have met, challenges you have overcome and ultimately what you have achieved. It can be helpful, positive and build your self-confidence, as well as motivating you to press on with your goals. Constructive â€" Identifying what hasn’t gone well or any gaps in what you need to do or want to achieve. This is the first step to putting plans in place to overcome or fill the gap for the year ahead. It can be helpful to get things clear in your mind and get motivated. For example, ‘I met my goal to organise work experience over the summer with a local law firm, which has encouraged me to apply for a training contract next year’. ‘I need to improve my presentation skills  as I have found it hard in my seminar groups this year and I may need good presentation skills when talking to clients’. Expectation It is good to think about and review your expectations for what you did during the year. Ask yourself the following questions: Did you meet your expectations and achieve your goals in the last year? Did you have realistic expectations in how to achieve your goals? How could you learn from your experience in the last year?     (Improve or repeat what you did in the year ahead) Is there anything you need to do to make your plans realistic to achieve for the next year? Do you need to alter your expectations of yourself or of other people or circumstances? Perhaps you had low expectations and need to believe in who you are and what you can do? Maybe you expected too much putting too much pressure on yourself in the process? By being more self-aware about your own expectations and having time to reflect on what you have done, what you have learnt about yourself and what you want for your next year, then  you can be positive about the year ahead and plan your goals and approach to take. Some examples could be: Achieving or continuing better grades in your studies Planning your time better to meet essay deadlines Gaining a part time jobs to support you financially Improving your skills to fit the role you want to do in the future Finding work experience or an internship Exploring ideas for what you want to do Researching an industry sector to find employers to apply to Tailoring your CV and covering letter Preparing for an interview or assessment centre   Making Plans Create goals for yourself for the year ahead which is going to be achievable. Remember if you achieve them you can always set some more! One of the best ways to do this is by making goals that are SMART or are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. There is little point in deciding on a goal that you can’t tell when you have achieved it. Examples of goals using SMART: Book an appointment with Careers to discuss my options by the end of January 2015 Apply for a summer internship in the area of marketing by end of July 2015. Make a list of Finance graduate schemes that interest me by the end of August 2015.   What help is available? Personal Branding Interview Jason Fried - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Personal Branding Interview Jason Fried - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke to Jason Fried, who is the co-founder and President of 37signals.       In this interview, Jason talks about how simplicity is so important when it comes to products, his views on personal branding, web 2.0, the future, and more. Your brand is based on simplicity and your products represent that. Why is simplicity so effective? Simple is effective because its usually all thats required. Plus simple is easy to understand. Its approachable, easy to try, it makes sense, and its usually true. Most peoples problems are simple problems until someone makes them complicated. We try to make them simple. How did you get started with 37 Signals and when did Jeff Bezos (CEO of Amazon.com) come onboard? How did his brand help? We started 37signals in 1999. We were a web design firm up until 2004/2005 when we launched Basecamp. About a year later Basecamp was making more money than our web design firm so we stopped designing web sites for other people and started designing software for ourselves. We took the investment from Bezos in 2006. I dont know if his involvement helps from the outside, but its great to have access to his insight and experience on the inside. Weve definitely learned a few things from him and expect to learn more as time goes on. What is your impression of web 2.0? What could web 3.0 look like? I dont like version numbers on big ideas like the web. The mean so many different things to so many different people. Web 1, 2, 3 its all just the web mixed up a little differently. The things that actually happen seem to be things that werent predicted. What steps did you take to establish your personal brand? How have you been able to speak at many conferences? I dont really think much about personal brand. I work at 37signals. I think about 37signals first. Whatever else comes of it comes as a by-product of being part of 37signals. I dont shy away from the personal branding benefits, but I dont actively pursue them. For example, I dont have a personal blog or a personal site. When I write I write on the 37signals sites. Regarding conferences: Getting started was tough because I was terrified of public speaking, but like anything, you get better the more you do it. Now I really enjoy it and dont get nervous at all. Speaking engagements usually lead to more speaking engagements. Most of them come from word of mouth these days. What are your 2010 tech predictions? I dont really have any. Dont mean to be a downer there, but I really dont think 2010 will be much different from 2009. I dont think things change or move as fast as we sometimes like to think they do. Jason Fried is the co-founder and President of 37signals, a Chicago-based company committed to building the best web-based tools possible with the least number of features necessary. 37signals’ products include Basecamp, Highrise, Backpack, Campfire, Ta-da List, and Writeboard. 37signals’ products do less than the competitionâ€"intentionally. Jason believes there’s real value and beauty in the basics. Elegance, respect for people’s desire to simply get stuff done, and honest ease of use are the hallmarks of 37signals products.

Casual Dos and Donts Why Quality Still Matters

Casual Dos and Donts Why Quality Still Matters When it comes to casual wear, theres a whole list of dos and donts.  But before you even start to consider that,  youve got to get real about quality.  You might be thinking that because its casual, cheap is always okay.  But in todays casual world, both work and play, that might be a big mistake. Have you noticed that a casual outfit can look totally classy, hip, or whatever your intended look is?  On the other hand, youve probably seen someone going casual and it was like . . . bad.  Just bad.  Maybe even into the realm of sad.  So its not just about choosing casual.  Its about using all the same dressing knowledge youd apply to any other kind of outfit. While you might get away with grunging on the couch with your BFF, if youre going out and about and care even a tiny bit about the image youre projecting, the benefits of going with quality pay off.  So its worth it to always at least consider three things:  fit, feel, and construction.   Fit There are a huge number of body shapes out there.  Even two people who are the same height and weight may be proportioned quite differently.  So what looks fine on one person may not look good at all on another.  Add to that the reality that the cheaper the clothing, the less the likelihood that its even a little tailored.  And the difference in fit, and therefore look, is huge between a straight line cut and a properly fitting item. Feel Theres two aspects of feel.  How the item feels to the touch, and how you feel when you wear it.  Its my personal experience that when I slip into something thats high quality, I feel very different.  Theres a reason for that cliche dressed to kill.  Its because you feel as though you could conquer the world.  Its a boost to self-confidence like no other. Construction While fit and feel are easy to understand, quality is such an elusive idea.  Whose standard are we using?   The best way to relate to quality is to remember your wedding dress, or a formal youve had in the past.  You looked at it and it was simple perfection.  Straight, even seams.  Finished and tailored everywhere.  And when you slipped it on . . . you probably took on a posture that was almost demanded by the excellence of your clothing. The Economics of Quality Once youre beyond the physical aspects of going with quality, youre ready to talk about cost.  Yeah, we all have to consider how our clothes fit into our budget.  Or sometimes, how we can force our budget to comply with our clothing needs!  But even if youre on a tight budget, is going with lower-priced clothes a good idea? If you look at the math of it, youll find that many times the real cost of owning a cheap piece of clothing is actually higher than owning something of better quality.   The better quality item lasts longer, and the cost per wear is lower than a cheaper item thats going to wear out sooner.    And dont forget the cost in time to have to go out and replace the item that wears out more quickly.  Finally, by going with the cheaper item, you lose out on the fit and feel benefits mentioned above. So while its tempting to go casual on the cheap, consider all the factors.   And remember, perhaps most important of all is the message youre sending to yourself.  Yeah, youre worth it.

Follow These Steps For Long-Term Career Success

Follow These Steps For Long-Term Career Success Photo Credit â€" Pexels.comNo matter what your career is, chances are you are keen to make it as much of a success as possible. Regardless of how far along you are, or where on the ladder, there is always more you could be doing. To tell the truth, there are really only a few basic steps which you need to follow to ensure long-term success in your career. As long as you are following these, you are bound to do well in your chosen field. Without further ado, let’s take a look at what those steps are.1. Put Yourself ForwardevalEmployers tend to really value somebody who isn’t afraid to take the lead. This behaviour itself can manifest in many different ways. Often, it simply means that you are the first to volunteer for a new project. Even this simple act is a subtly powerful way of improving your chances of promotion. If you are consistently putting yourself forward in this way, it is that much more likely that your employer will recognise you.Sometimes, this can be a little more d ifficult. If, for example, you find yourself in a large team, it can be particularly challenging. It might take a lot longer to get properly noticed in this setting. However, with enough persistence, it will still pay off in the end. Of course, if you end up working for a company which appears not to value you at all, you might want to consider something better.2. Acquire The Relevant KnowledgePhoto Credit â€" Pexels.comAll career paths have their own specific knowledge set. If you are keen to advance as far as possible in your chosen area, then you need to ensure you know as much as possible. This sometimes means that you will have to study or receive training outside of working hours. However, if you really want to get ahead, then that is probably worth it. The more knowledge and skills you can gain, the better off you are in the long run. Make sure that you are learning as much as possible about your specific area of work.Often, this will mean receiving training from a specific in stitution. It is always preferable to be trained by a specialist. A technician would benefit mostly from a hvac training school, for example. Always go for the schooling that most suits your career path.3. Make Networking Your Favourite PastimeNo matter what kind of work you do, this next piece of advice is always going to land well. You should put as much effort as possible into ensuring that you network in your spare time. It might not necessarily be tempting to spend your leisure time networking.evalHowever, often it is the difference between long-term success and failure. When you make networking a priority, you are putting yourself out there in the very field which you want to succeed in. Attend functions and make the effort to speak to people. But remember the golden rule: one or two strong connections is better than a hundred weak ones. Don’t spread yourself out too thinly, or it might end up having the opposite effect.

LinkedIn Is A Great Tool. BUT Here Are 5 More Things You Need To Know - Pathfinder Careers

LinkedIn Is A Great Tool…. BUT Here Are 5 More Things You Need To Know - Pathfinder Careers LinkedIn Is A Great Tool…. BUT Here Are 5 More Things You Need To Know I just saw a great blog post on how LinkedIn can cause problems at work on Resume Bear, and it got me thinking that there are some things that job seekers should be aware of in addition to the excellent points mentioned in that article: 1. Sudden flurry of updates tell your network something’s a-foot. Every time you update one area of your profile, everyone in your network is updated. So imagine if you really start tinkering with your profile in earnest… that means there’s activity going on and that you are cleaning up your act, possibly preparing for some action. Instead: take the profile off public visibility, update it with everything you intend to change, then make it visible again to avoid multiple updates. Better yet: regularly update your profile with one thing at a time, perhaps once per week. If updates are constant and regular, there are no red flags. 2. Reasons to be contacted. If you include “Looking for job opportunities” or anything that implies an active job search, you could be informing your employer indirectly that you are anticipating a change. If you are employed, keep your reasons to be contacted business-related only. 3. Using your work email address to register. So you have a robust network, lots of recommendations, and everything is humming along. Except you just lost your job as well as your company email address. Guess what? You could get locked out of your account if your employer decides to exploit this and changes the password on your LinkedIn account too. It would be a whole world of pain trying to get logged back in â€" so the point here is: Take your account registrations OFFLINE to a personal email account. You won’t regret it as you will always have control of who logs in YOU! 4. If you are looking for work, use your personal phone number. I cannot tell you how many times people have included a work number when conducting a job search. Don’t EVER use company resources to look for work elsewhere. 5. Space out your recommendations. If you suddenly start going on a “binge” asking everyone and their brother to recommend you, this can also set up some red flags for your employer who might be monitoring your profile. Instead of asking everyone all at once, instead try pacing them out â€" like one per month. That way, again, a flurry of activity doesn’t suggest that something is going on in the background.
